Short Description of Porto Vecchio:

Porto-Vecchio, the third largest town in Corsica, is located in the south east of Corsica, about 25 km from Bonifacio. It is about 90 km to the south of Bastia on the main north-south road which joins the Cap Corse to Bonifacio. Porto Vecchio, is a prosperous economic and tourist town with all the advantages of a sea resort, sun and beaches. Porto-Vecchio is situated in an exceptional environment offering a wide range of leisure and cultural activities. Salt has always played an important role in the town's economy, and it became known as the "City of Salt". However, today the salt marshes are no longer worked.

In 1539, the senators of Genoa suggested to the office of San Giorgio, a rich Genoese bank, to construct a fortress on a vast rock of red porphyry, which would allow the plain to be exploited and used for the exportation of goods to their own city. And so the Citadel of Porto-Vecchio was born. In spite of having a large bay and fertile hinterland, it became a hotbed for malaria and a hideout for Barbary pirates. Between 1540 and 1589 the citadel was destroyed and rebuilt three times. In the end, the Genoese Republic gave the Island to France in 1768. One year later, the armies of King Louis XV took possession of the "Bastion of France", renamed it and built a 3-hectare fortification.
