Short Description of Propriano: Protected from the winds, the harbour seems to have been used since the Roman period. The many remains discovered indicate that this small old town could be Pauca, noted on Ptolemy's map in the 2nd century. In the early 16th century, this modest port of call was unoccupied due to the activities of Barbary pirates, but received ships transporting wheat, barley and oil. On the 12 June 1564, Sampiero Corso and 70 companions landed here, keen to reconquer Corsica. In about 1767, on the orders of Pasquale Paoli, the Torra Nova tower was built for coastal defence. The road built from Ajaccio to the south of the island allowed Propriano to be developed and on 28 June 1860, to obtain through Napoleon III, its separation with Fozzano and thus its independence as a commune. Increasing tourism at the end of the 1950s led the village, its creeks and its activities, to become a well-known seaside resort.
