Strasbourg, which was a humanism centre, has a long history of higher-education excellence, melting French and German intellectual traditions.

Although Strasbourg had been annexed by Royal France in 1683, it still remained connected to the German-speaking intellectual world throughout the 18th century.

The university attracted numerous students from the Holy Roman Empire with Goethe, Metternich and Montgelas, who studied law in Strasbourg, among the most prominent.

Nowadays, Strasbourg is known to offer among the best university courses in France, after Paris.

There are three universities in Strasbourg:

  • Strasbourg I - Université Louis Pasteur
  • Strasbourg II - Université Marc Bloch
  • Strasbourg III - Université Robert Schuman

The campus of the École nationale d'administration (ENA) is located in Strasbourg (the former one being in Paris). The location of the "new" ENA - which trains most of the nation's high-ranking civil servants - was meant to give a European vocation to the school.

The École supérieure des Arts décoratifs (ESAD) is an art school of Europe-wide reputation.

The permanent campus of the International Space University (ISU) is located in the south of Strasbourg (Illkirch-Graffenstaden).

Université Louis Pasteur

The Université Louis Pasteur, also known as Strasbourg I or ULP is a large university in Strasbourg, Alsace, France. As of 2004, there were approximately 18,000 students enrolled at the university, including around 3,000 foreign students.

Research and teaching at ULP concentrates on the natural sciences and technology/medicine. The university is a member of the LERU (League of European Research Universities). It is named after the famous 19th-century French scientist Louis Pasteur.

Université Marc Bloch

The Université Marc Bloch, also known as Strasbourg II or UMB is a university in Strasbourg, Alsace, France. As of 2004, it had around 13,000 students.

Its name used to be "l'Université des Sciences Humaines" (the University of Social Sciences), but it was renamed in 1998 in honour of the French historian Marc Bloch. It retains its focus on humanities subjects and the social sciences.

Université Robert Schuman

The Université Robert Schuman, also known as Strasbourg III or URS, is a university in Strasbourg, Alsace, France. As of 2004, there were approximately 9,000 students enrolled at the university, including more than 1,500 foreign students.

The university tends to teach and research in fields such as law, politics and international relations.

This university also includes two grande écoles, the Institut d'études politiques de Strasbourg, second in excellence after the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) and the Institut Européen d'Etudes Commerciales Supérieures de Strasbourg (IECS), which is one of the leading French business schools.

The Université Robert Schuman is named after the politician Robert Schuman, which should not be confused with the composer Robert Schumann.
