The route of lakes and shepherd huts

From Arzenc to Saint Germain du Teil and Nasbinals to Prinsuéjols, the Aubrac is full of wonderful old villages.

They are sometimes hidden away from the road, so make a detour to discover their authentic architecture. Their stone, churches, chateaux and ruins all have a long tale to tell.

As do their people who have forged the character of this land and raised the Aubrac breed of cattle, the fourme cheese and the aligot to heritage level. The markets and farms are colourful and welcoming places to experience moments of truth and intensity.

A3
Nasbinals This little town of sturdy granite and basalt houses is the setting-off point for many excursions and discovery trips. Its lovely Romanesque church built in the12th-13th centuries contains several listed works.

Twice a year – 17th August and 9th September – Nasbinals holds a livestock fair, mostly of cattle and horses. Livestock market in Nasbinals, Aubrac, Lozère, France

All the farmers from the region attend. These traditional meetings go centuries back and are moments of warmth and intensity, full of local colour and activity.

Whatever you do, don’t miss them if you are in the region. Near to Nasbinals on 1st June is the fair of Malbouzon, the biggest agricultural fair in the department.

B3
Chateau of La Baume North of Marvejols, in the borough of Prinsuéjols, is the chateau of La Baume, nicknamed the “Versailles of Gévaudan”.  Château of La Baume north of Marvejols, Aubrac, Lozère, France

Listed as a historic building, it is one of the most beautiful chateaux in the Lozère. It is 18th century and its decoration imposed by Louis XIV is influenced by the Italianate inspira-tion of the artists of Montpellier. Open to visitors.

B2 Aumont-Aubrac A stage on the pil-grimage route of Santiago de Compostela, "villa-geétape" on the A75Cross of Rode near Nasbinals, Aubrac, Lozère, France motorway, Aumont Aubrac is renowned for its good food and its lively market days.

And

Arzenc d’Apcher,
one of the most beautiful sites in Lozère where the vestiges look down from a height of 200m onto the turbulent gorges of the Bès.

The tombs of Malbousquet. At 5km south-east of St Germain du Teil, are some fifty tombs carved into the rock face. Their date is uncertain but they are called "Jewish".

Les Salces. Pay a visit to its church, a fully-restored masterpiece of Auvergne Romanesque art.

Crosses in basalt typical of the Aubrac are dotted along the paths or set at the junctions of minor roads surrounded by a landscape of pastureland criss-crossed by drystone walls.
