Montlucon is a mediaeval town of character and the Auvergne's second city. It is one of the oldest communities in the Boubonnais with a remarkable historic and religious heritage. Its fifteen stand-out buildings and twenty-two artworks are designated national monuments, justifying the title 'Town of Art'.

The old town, with its picturesque pedestrian streets lined with half-timbered houses, is dominated by Louis II of Bourbon's chateau, now the Museum of Popular Music.
