South West : Nouvelle Aquitaine
Diversity has always been one of the most important features of Aquitaine, contributing to its wealth. It can be seen in ethic and cultural terms (Bearn, Basque Country, Gascony, Perigord…), but its clearest manifestation is in the variety of landscapes: vast beaches bordered by dunes, vineyards, forests, mountains, lakes and rivers, chateaux, fortified villages, urban and rural architecture.
Summer warmth—of air and water—coupled with a nice breeze lend themselves perfectly to swimming, whitewater sports and long walks. Autumn and spring are ideal for discovering the region’s cultural, gastronomic and winemaking riches, while winter attracts downhill and cross-country skiing enthusiasts to the Pyrenean resorts. As for urban tourism, this can be enjoyed all year round as it offers the wonders of the local architecture, the delights of shopping, the fascination of museums and exhibitions, as well as dance evenings, theatre, music and cinema.
