Amazingly, Grenoble is only a little over six hours from the UK by train. Take the Eurostar to Paris or Lille and then change on to high-speed TGV the rest of the way. You’ll arrive in the city centre station – the airport’s miles outside it – refreshed and ready to go. And you’ll have enjoyed some memorable scenery along the journey. It certainly puts the hassle of flying in perspective.
TGV trains from Paris and Lille arrive at Grenoble Station, which is only around half a mile (1 km) from the heart of the city. A second city station, Gare de Grenoble-Universités-Gières, is close to the shared campus of Grenoble’s four universities. It provides limited local and regional train services.
Grenoble Station serves the high-speed TGV network, with the most frequent trains running to and from Paris. Only around half a mile (1 km) east of the city centre, it could be within walking distance of your hotel. But with bus, taxi and tram services as you come out of the station, you might prefer to save your legs.
In service in since 1858, the station was completely rebuilt in ahead of the 1968 Winter Olympics. The glass front contributes to its 1960s look.
As the central train station for a population of 400,000, Grenoble station is comfortable and efficient. It has a bus station attached and services the tram as well.
