France has undoubtedly some of the best ski resorts in the world. With more than 200 stations, generally in the Alps and the Pyrenees. The largest ski areas in the world are found in the French Alps. 3 Valleys with 600 kilometers of alpine slopes! There are also the best summer ski resorts in Europe. If you’re a skier, or just a lover of winter sports, then you need to spend some time on the slopes, skiing in France.

Skiing in the Northern Alps

The Northern Alps is wide valleys which offer all the diversity of the mountains with large international resorts and also delicious villages.

The jewel resorts are in Savoie where you’ll find the largest ski area in the world: Les 3 Vallées with Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens and Les Menuires. Outstanding venues like Tignes, Val d’Isère, La Plagne and Les Arcs and Les Saisies is the place to go for Nordic skiing. Haute-Savoie is home to the first major ski resorts in France: Chamonix, Megève, and Saint Gervais. Finally in the Isère medium altitude mountain offers Nordic skiing in Autrans, downhill skiing in Villard de Lans and near Grenoble Oisans hosts the stations of Les Deux Alpes, Alpe d’Huez and Chamrousse.

Ski in the Southern Alps

In the Hautes-Alpes, you can find resorts such as Serre Chevalier with 250 kilometers of skiruns, La Grave-La Meije with its altitude difference of 2150 meters, excellent for its freeride, Montgenèvre, a traditional village, at 1860m altitude and a plethora of snowy landscaptes at Risoul, Vars, Les Orres, Orcières 1850, and Le Devoluy.

The Jura Massif

This is the realm for Nordic and cross-country skiing enthusiasts–one of the most beautiful areas of France. You’ll find over 2 500 km of cross-country ski trails and a countryside speckled with authentic villages which multiply the charms of discovery. Well-known for its mythical “Transjurassienne”, competition for accomplished athletes as well as ideal for seekers of tranquility and large spaces.

The Massif Central reveals landscapes without end: Plateaux, Mountains, Volcanos… It includes the Auvergne, Aveyron, Lozère, The ski stations of the Massif Central are more family oriented. The main ones are Le Lioran on the Cantal mountains and Le Mont-Dore and Super-Besse in the Sancy massif.

Ski in the Vosges

The Vosges resorts attract the whole family due to diversity of activities: downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or walking … All have something to enjoy wrapped up in snow. The winter sports resorts are in the south, like la Bresse and Gérardmer. The pleasures of sliding and many other snow activities reach the peaks at La Bresse.
